As you all know, the Province made a significant announcement Wednesday about housing supply, renter protections, inclusionary zoning, and supports for those experiencing homelessness. This is intended to be the start of our work with you to address the housing crisis. If you’d like to review the plan in detail, it is available at https://beta.novascotia.ca/documents/solutions-housing-and-homelessness. For your convenience, I’ve included the main news release below.
I know you will all have questions about how this impacts your municipality. There were measures in the announcement specific to HRM, but the bulk of it will apply across the province.
We are still working out the details of affordable housing projects and establishing a list of land the province owns across Nova Scotia, that can be better used for affordable housing. Nova Scotians from across the province will be able to access rent supplements. There’s a great deal still to be done, and this announcement is just the beginning of our work.
I know your communities all have affordable housing challenges. I want to assure you that we are looking at affordable housing across the province. We want to hear from you. There will be plenty of opportunity for us to discuss those concerns and to find solutions together. I’m very much looking forward to working with you on this important issue.
I’ll have an opportunity to discuss this with Mayors and Wardens Wednesday at 5:30 on our call. If you have questions in the meantime, I’d encourage you to call Deputy Minister Paul LaFleche at 902-229-8836.
